MRTS Takeover Plan Moves Forward

After several months of discussions and detailed planning, Southern Railway has officially sent the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the takeover of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to the Railway Board for final approval.
This is an important step in the long-awaited process of transferring control of Chennai’s MRTS network to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).
If the Railway Board approves the draft agreement, the Government of Tamil Nadu will then formally sign the MoU with Southern Railway, allowing the takeover process to officially begin.
The proposed transfer is expected to improve the management, maintenance, and modernization of the MRTS network by bringing it under a single urban transport authority.
Many transport experts believe that integrating MRTS with Chennai Metro could lead to better coordination, smoother passenger services, improved infrastructure, and more efficient operations across the city’s rail transit systems.
The MRTS has faced several challenges over the years, including maintenance concerns, lower passenger satisfaction, and operational inefficiencies. Officials hope that under CMRL’s management, the system can be upgraded and better integrated with Chennai’s expanding metro network.
This development marks a major milestone for Chennai’s public transportation system and could significantly improve urban mobility for daily commuters in the future.
