A landslide struck the Kurla area of Mumbai early on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, killing at least two people and leaving several others feared trapped under the debris. Rescue teams have been working at the site to find and save people who may still be trapped.
The incident took place at around 3:48 a.m. near Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Kurla West, close to Rathod Medical. The sudden landslide caused a large amount of soil and debris to fall onto nearby rooms in the residential area.
Rescue Operation Underway
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared the incident a Level II emergency. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has joined the rescue operation along with around 50 BMC staff members.
Rescue workers are carefully removing debris and searching the affected area for survivors. Officials are also providing assistance to people who have been injured or displaced by the incident.
Victims Identified
Two people involved in the incident have been identified as Sohel Ansari, 18, and Mohamad Ansari, 14.
Both were taken to Rajawadi Hospital for treatment. Mohamad was declared dead at the hospital, while Sohel suffered serious head injuries and is receiving medical attention.
Local residents said the landslide debris covered rooms inside the chawl. According to witnesses, around six to eight people may have been trapped after the debris fell onto the residential structures.
Officials Continue Search
BMC officials said rescue teams are working continuously to locate anyone who may still be trapped. The teams are using equipment and manual methods to remove the debris carefully so that people underneath are not put at further risk.
Authorities are also assessing the condition of nearby structures and checking whether additional areas could be dangerous.
The incident has caused fear among residents in the area, particularly those living close to the affected site. Officials are expected to investigate what caused the landslide and whether heavy rainfall or unstable soil contributed to the accident.
