“Muttukadu Boathouse Struggles Despite Tourism Revenue”

Muttukadu Boathouse Faces Neglect Despite Tourism Potential

Visitors to Muttukadu Boathouse often complain about poor maintenance, bad
drainage smell, expensive rides, and lack of new activities. A plan announced
in 2023 to develop an island and promote adventure tourism has not been
implemented yet.

Muttukadu, located along ECR, is one of the most popular waterfront spots.
It was opened in 1984 and has great tourism potential. On weekends, it attracts
around 2,000 visitors and operates over 40 boats, including two jet skis.

From April to October this year, Muttukadu earned ₹3 crore in revenue. But
the area remains underdeveloped due to poor water quality and weak infrastructure.
Tourism experts say a coordinated revival plan is needed to turn it into a
full-fledged backwater leisure destination.
