Obstacles Delay Chennai Airport Main Runway Work

Chennai Airport’s plan to resurface its main runway is facing delays because the secondary runway has obstacles in its approach path. The secondary runway must be clear and usable before work can start on the main runway. Airport officials have asked the state government to remove these obstacles quickly.

At the Airport Advisory Committee meeting on Friday, chaired by Sriperumbudur MP TR Baalu, it was decided that a joint committee of state revenue officials and AAI representatives will work with stakeholders, including the state government, to speed up the clearance process.

Chennai Airport director M Raja Kishore said that aircraft movements have increased from 425 to 475 per day, and nearly 70,000 passengers now use the three terminals daily. The increase comes as the airport prepares to close the main runway for resurfacing, which is needed to maintain safe operations for large Code E aircraft.
