Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has urged the BJP to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill directly in Parliament instead of bringing similar laws separately in individual states.
Abdullah questioned the BJP’s approach and pointed out that not all parties supporting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) may agree with the UCC. He said that if the BJP has enough support, it should bring the bill to Parliament and allow lawmakers to debate it at the national level.
He also argued that introducing the UCC only in BJP-ruled states would not make it truly “uniform” across the country. According to Abdullah, a law intended to apply to all citizens should be discussed and considered at the national level.
The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister also criticised the BJP over other major proposals that have been discussed in the past, including “One Nation, One Election” and certain reservation-related policies. He suggested that political differences within the NDA could be one reason why the UCC issue is being pursued through individual states.
Meanwhile, Abdullah welcomed recent efforts to reduce tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). He described the development as a positive step, particularly for people living in areas close to the border.
Abdullah also praised India’s foreign policy efforts at the BRICS summit, saying India was able to secure international condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack. He viewed this as a sign of India’s growing ability to raise important security issues on the international stage.
Overall, Abdullah stressed that major national policies such as the UCC require wider political discussion and national consensus. He questioned whether implementing the law separately in different states can achieve the nationwide objective associated with the proposal
