Pakistan will face a major challenge in the first Test against England at Headingley after captain Babar Azam was ruled out because of a hand injury.
Babar injured his right hand during Pakistan’s recent warm-up match against a County Select XI. The injury has also affected him earlier this month during the second Test against the West Indies.
The Pakistan team management had hoped that Babar would recover in time for the opening Test. However, he has not recovered fully and will not be fit to play when the match begins on Wednesday.
Pakistan coach Sarfaraz Ahmed confirmed Babar’s absence on Tuesday. He also announced that Salman Ali Agha will captain the team in the first Test.
Babar’s absence is a major setback for Pakistan because he is one of the team’s most important batters. He has played a key role in Pakistan’s batting in all three formats and is known for his ability to score runs under pressure.
Without Babar, Pakistan will need other senior players to take more responsibility with the bat. The team will also have to find a way to maintain a strong batting order against England’s bowlers.
The Headingley match is the first game of a three-Test series between Pakistan and England. Playing in England can be difficult because the conditions often help fast bowlers, especially early in a Test match.
Salman Ali Agha will have the additional responsibility of leading the team while also contributing with his batting and bowling. His leadership will be important as Pakistan look to start the series positively.
The Pakistan players are expected to remain focused despite losing their captain. Teamwork, discipline and strong performances from the other senior players will be important if Pakistan are to compete successfully.
England will also be looking to make a strong start to the series on home soil. With Babar unavailable, the first Test is expected to be a tough test of Pakistan’s depth and ability to perform without their star player.
Pakistan will hope that Babar makes a full recovery before the next Test and returns to the team when he is fit to play.
