Pete Alonso Hits 3-Run Homer in Orioles’ Win Over Marlins

MIAMI (AP) — Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer, Adley Rutschman had two RBI doubles, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Miami Marlins 7-4 on Wednesday night.

Alonso has been extremely successful against the Marlins since debuting in 2019, with 57 extra-base hits and 33 home runs in 105 games. This includes his time with the Mets when the Marlins were a divisional rival.

Brandon Young pitched well despite giving up three runs in the first inning. He kept the Marlins scoreless for the next five innings. Rico Garcia secured the win by pitching the ninth inning, allowing just one run in 18 appearances this season.

The Orioles won two straight games in Miami after being outscored 39-10 during a four-game sweep by the Yankees earlier in the series.

In the first inning, Alonso hit an 0-2 fastball from Eury Pérez 407 feet to left-center, giving the Orioles a 3-0 lead. The Marlins tied the game in the bottom half with Jakob Marsee’s two-run double and Owen Caissie’s RBI single.

Dylan Beavers put the Orioles back ahead with a ground-rule double in the fourth inning. Rutschman added run-scoring doubles in the fifth and seventh innings, while Blaze Alexander contributed an RBI triple in the eighth.

Taylor Ward, known for his high on-base percentage, drew three walks and scored each time, raising his OBP from .429 to .434.

Pérez pitched five innings, striking out six batters but allowing four hits, five walks, and five runs.

The Orioles’ Cade Povich will start against the Marlins’ Max Meyer in the next game as Baltimore aims for a three-game sweep.
