Powerful Winter Storm Paralyzes US Northeast

A powerful winter storm has hit the northeastern region of the United States, causing major disruption across several states. Cities from Washington, D.C. to Boston have been badly affected, with heavy snowfall and strong winds bringing daily life to a halt.

The National Weather Service has warned that the storm is affecting the northern Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. In many areas, snow has been falling at a rate of two to three inches per hour. Some places are expected to receive up to two feet of snow. Because of this, travel has become extremely difficult and dangerous.

Blizzard warnings have been issued in several parts of the region. New York City announced a travel ban on Sunday evening. Mayor Zoharan Mamdani said the city has not seen a storm this strong in the past ten years. New Jersey also imposed a travel ban, while Rhode Island advised people to stay off the roads. Several states declared emergencies as the storm grew stronger.

Air travel has been heavily affected. According to The Wall Street Journal, nearly 8,000 flights were cancelled over two days, especially in Boston and New York. Airports in these cities faced major delays and cancellations.

Boston and large parts of eastern Massachusetts are expected to receive up to two feet of snow. Wind speeds could reach 75 miles per hour, increasing the risk of power outages and damage. The Weather Service office in Boston described the storm as possibly historic and very destructive.

In Washington, D.C., several inches of wet snow are expected. Federal government offices announced a two-hour delay, and many schools in the area either closed or opened late.

Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety instructions. Emergency crews are working around the clock to clear roads and restore services. The full impact of the storm will become clearer once the weather improves.
