‘Propitious environment needs to be created’: Bangladesh says PM Tarique Rahman will not visit India until Hasina’s extradition

Creating a favorable environment for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to India is essential, according to Bangladesh. The country has stated that Rahman will not travel to India until New Delhi agrees to extradite Sheikh Hasina, who was the former prime minister of Bangladesh and fled during anti-government protests in 2024.
Bangladesh and India have had a tense relationship since Hasina’s government collapsed, leading her to seek refuge in neighboring India. She is currently there and faces the death penalty in Bangladesh after being convicted of crimes against humanity. Dhaka has repeatedly requested her extradition.
Foreign Ministry official A.K.M. Shahidul Karim clarified that media reports suggesting Rahman might visit India soon were speculative. He emphasized the need for a conducive atmosphere for such a visit, urging Indian authorities to speed up the extradition process for Hasina and other fugitives. India has indicated that the request is under review.
Rahman, who assumed office in February, has already visited Malaysia and China, breaking the tradition of Bangladeshi leaders starting their international trips with India. High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi of India met with Rahman last week, sparking speculation about a potential breakthrough in relations.
Karim noted that officials from both countries have discussed the possibility of Rahman’s visit but highlighted that Sheikh Hasina’s media appearances are complicating the process. Despite her conviction, Hasina has vowed to return to Bangladesh by December, even if it means facing imprisonment.
Bangladesh is pursuing a “Bangladesh First” foreign policy, focusing on sovereignty and non-interference while aiming to build mutually beneficial ties with India and other nations.
