Tamil Nadu IT and Digital Services Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan strongly defended the State’s language policy on Wednesday. He challenged the Central government to “do better” if it wants Tamil Nadu to change its stand on the three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP).
He made these comments while speaking at the India Today Tamil Nadu Roundtable event. During the discussion, he explained that Tamil Nadu has always followed a two-language policy and believes it has worked well for the State. He said the Centre must show clear benefits and better results before asking Tamil Nadu to reconsider its position.
The Minister said language is an important and sensitive issue in Tamil Nadu. He added that the State’s policy is based on its history, culture, and the wishes of its people.
The event took place at a time when Assembly elections are approaching in Tamil Nadu and political parties are actively holding alliance talks. The India Today Roundtable brought together senior politicians, political strategists, policymakers, and experts to discuss key issues facing the State.
The language debate is expected to remain an important topic in the upcoming elections, as parties share their views on education policy and Centre-State relations.
