Rain Damages Newly Repaired Roads in Chennai

Several major roads in the city, including Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Kalaigna
Karunanidhi Salai, Medavakkam–Sholinganallur Road, and Arcot Road, have been
badly affected after five days of rain caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The damaged
roads are slowing down traffic and causing problems for motorists, especially
because potholes have formed even on recently repaired stretches.

Vijay Karthick from Perumbakkam said that Rajiv Gandhi Salai was repaired just
a month ago, but now the top surface has come off in many places. He says it
looks like the road material was laid without proper binding. I am avoiding
OMR and using ECR instead, which surprisingly has no damage even after the rains.”

On OMR, water is getting collected at the joints between the service road and
the main road. In some places like Dollar Biscuit near Sholinganallur, the
surface layer has come apart.
