Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening the close relationship between India and Sri Lanka. His visit will focus mainly on defence cooperation, maritime security and regional stability.
Before leaving for Sri Lanka, Singh said he was looking forward to holding productive discussions with the country’s leadership. He is expected to meet senior Sri Lankan officials during his visit and discuss ways to further improve cooperation between the two countries.
Focus on Defence Cooperation
Defence and security cooperation are expected to be important topics during Singh’s visit. India and Sri Lanka have maintained regular cooperation between their armed forces through training programmes, military exchanges and other activities.

INS Udaygiri Arrives in Colombo
At the same time as Singh’s arrival, the Indian Navy’s INS Udaygiri reached Colombo Port on Tuesday.
INS Udaygiri is an advanced Indian-made stealth guided-missile frigate. Its visit is expected to strengthen cooperation and understanding between the Indian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy.
Sri Lankan naval personnel will board the ship as part of familiarisation, knowledge-sharing and training activities. Such interactions allow personnel from both countries to learn from each other and improve their ability to work together.
Goodwill and Cultural Activities
The crew of INS Udaygiri will also take part in goodwill activities with members of the Sri Lanka Navy. These programmes are aimed at building stronger personal and professional relationships between the two naval forces.
During their stay, the crew is also expected to visit local tourist and cultural sites in Sri Lanka. These activities will provide an opportunity for the sailors to learn more about the country’s culture and history.
