Rare Brain Aneurysm Treated Successfully in Chennai

A 60-year-old woman with a rare and dangerous brain condition was successfully treated at Rela Hospital in Chennai. Doctors said she had a wide-neck cerebral aneurysm, which is a weak and bulging area in a blood vessel in the brain. If it bursts, it can cause serious bleeding and may even be life-threatening.

The woman was rushed to the hospital after she suddenly developed a severe headache and lost consciousness. Her blood pressure was extremely high at 230/140 mmHg, which made her condition more critical. Her family quickly brought her to the emergency department.

Doctors immediately carried out brain scans, including a CT scan and a special test called cerebral digital subtraction angiography. These tests showed that there was bleeding on the right side of her brain. The bleeding was caused by a ruptured aneurysm located at a vessel bifurcation, where one artery splits into two. This type of aneurysm is difficult to treat because of its wide neck and sensitive location.

To treat her, doctors used a modern and minimally invasive method instead of open brain surgery. They inserted a small tube through an artery in her wrist and guided it carefully to the brain. Through this tube, they placed a special device called a Woven EndoBridge (WEB) inside the aneurysm.

The WEB device helps block blood flow into the bulging area, allowing it to clot and preventing further bleeding. This reduces the risk of another rupture and protects the brain from more damage.

Doctors said the procedure was successful, and the patient responded well to treatment. She is now recovering under close medical care.

Hospital officials added that this advanced technique is safer and allows faster recovery compared to traditional surgery. They said early diagnosis and quick treatment played a key role in saving the woman’s life.
