Rising Waters Threaten Western Siberia and Urals

As icy waters continue to surge, Western Siberia, the Urals, and neighboring Kazakhstan grapple with the aftermath of devastating floods, prompting mass evacuations. While water levels have receded in some areas, regions like Kurgan and Tyumen face imminent threats from rising floods. The Kremlin acknowledges the severity of the situation, describing the floods as “treacherous” and forecasting the peak in Siberian regions by midweek.

Authorities scramble to mobilize all necessary resources to contain the damage and aid affected communities. Evacuations have been initiated in eight villages in Tyumen due to the swelling Tobol river, with concerns mounting over the rapidly rising Ishim river. As the Ishim river overflows in spots, exacerbated by melting ice cover, both Russian and Kazakh authorities remain on high alert.
