Sarfaraz Ahmed Named Pakistan Test Coach for Bangladesh Series

Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has been appointed as the head coach for Pakistan’s two-match Test series against Bangladesh in May. This follows the resignation of Australia’s Jason Gillespie in December 2024, with Aaqib Javed and Azhar Mahmood serving as interim coaches since then.

Asad Shafiq and Umar Gul have been named as batting and bowling coaches respectively for the series, while Shan Masood will lead the team as captain. Four uncapped players—Amad Butt, Azan Awais, Ghazi Ghori, and Abdullah Fazal—are included in the squad.

Sarfaraz Ahmed retired from international cricket in March 2023 after a career spanning 16 years. He previously led Pakistan to victory at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2006 and the Champions Trophy in 2017, defeating India both times. Recently, he mentored the Pakistan Under-19 team to the ACC U19 Asia Cup title in December 2024.

Players in the Test squad will assemble in Karachi on April 27 for a camp that concludes on May 1. Those competing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will join after their teams’ campaigns end, including players from the PSL 2026 final on May 3.

The first Test will be held at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka from May 8, with the second Test at Sylhet’s venue from May 16. Both matches are part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.

Pakistan’s Test squad includes: Shan Masood (captain), Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Azan Awais, Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper), Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wicketkeeper), Noman Ali, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
