Shreyas Iyer Overcomes Short-Ball Challenges

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer has shared how criticism about his struggles with short-pitched deliveries motivated him to improve his game. He credited a shift in mindset and hard practice for his progress.

Speaking on JioStar, Iyer explained that doubts about his ability to handle short balls were a turning point. “People said I couldn’t fix my short-ball problem, which made me determined to prove them wrong,” he shared. Iyer now takes a more aggressive approach, aiming to hit sixes when possible.

He thanked long-time mentor Pravin Amre and batting coach Abhishek Nayar for helping refine his technique. Iyer emphasized the importance of extended practice sessions, facing over 300 balls during each session to find what works best for him.

Iyer also highlighted the benefits of practicing against real bowlers rather than relying on sidearm throwdowns. This has improved his clarity and movement at the crease. He focuses on timing and balance, drawing inspiration from players like AB de Villiers, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

Driven by a desire to prove naysayers wrong, especially after injuries, Iyer pushed himself harder. His mindset shift helped him recover and return stronger.

In IPL 2026, PBKS achieved their sixth consecutive win, including the highest successful run chase in T20 history, defeating Delhi Capitals with seven balls remaining. They now have six wins and a no-result, earning them 13 points.

Punjab will face Rajasthan Royals next on April 28, aiming to continue their winning streak.
