A day after suspected Kuki extremists ambushed and killed four Liangmai Naga civilians, areas inhabited by Nagas in Manipur observed a shutdown on Friday (August 28, 2026). The victims were attacked on a village road between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga villages in the Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district on Thursday morning. They were traveling from Makui to Senapati when they were targeted.
A fifth person injured in the attack was hospitalized in Senapati, while a student leader who went missing after the incident managed to reach safety. The United Naga Council (UNC), the main Naga organization in Manipur, called for a one-day shutdown and community worship across Naga areas. Affected districts included Kamjong, Noney, Senapati, Tamenglong, and Ukhrul.
The bodies of the four victims were brought to Senapati for autopsy on Friday morning after being retrieved by security forces. A large crowd paid their respects during a condolence service. The UNC demanded justice and called for a special investigation team to probe the case.
Manipur’s Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh urged all sections of society to work together to rebuild trust and restore peace. He recalled Manipur’s peaceful past before 2023 but noted that recent violence has created division. “Today, there are those who do not want peace. We must identify and hold them accountable,” he said.
Meanwhile, a bomb exploded at the residence of Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh on Friday afternoon. No injuries were reported. The Chief Minister visited the site and condemned the incident alongside local leaders.
