Significance of PM Modi’s Visit to Norway for India-Nordic Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oslo on May 18, 2026, for a two-day visit. He will hold bilateral talks with Norwegian officials and later meet with leaders from Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, and Denmark at the 3rd India-Nordic Summit. Geopolitical conflicts, including those in Ukraine and Iran, along with their economic impacts, are expected to be key topics of discussion.

Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, mentioned that energy security will also be a focus. Norway aims to increase gas and oil supplies to India, despite recent lapses in U.S. sanction waivers on Russian oil, which may require India to reduce its imports from Russia. Modi’s visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Norway in 43 years.

The summit comes at a time when global geopolitics have shifted significantly since the last meeting in Copenhagen in 2022. The Nordic countries look forward to discussing climate change, sustainability, and green energy with India, as well as strengthening democratic collaboration.

Stener highlighted that Ukraine’s conflict and Middle East tensions will be addressed during Modi’s visit. Norway, being close to Russia, is particularly concerned about the impact of these issues on energy security. As an energy powerhouse, Norway seeks to enhance its role in supplying gas to India, supporting industries like fertilizer production through deals with companies like Equinor.

While discussions on reducing energy intake from Russia are expected, Stener emphasized that Norway understands India’s economic needs and will explore ways to collaborate on energy supply during the summit.
