Soraya Aghaei Becomes Iran’s First Woman IOC Member

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has elected its first female member from Iran, marking a historic moment for the country. The decision was made on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

Soraya Aghaei was chosen as the new member of the IOC with an overwhelming vote of 95-2. With this election, she becomes the 107th member of the global Olympic body. She is also the youngest current member of the IOC.

Aghaei is only the third person from Iran to be part of the IOC and the first Iranian representative to be elected since 2004. Her appointment is seen as an important step for greater representation of women and young leaders in international sports governance.

Sports officials said her election reflects the IOC’s efforts to promote diversity, inclusion, and gender equality within the organisation. Her presence is expected to give a stronger voice to athletes and sports development in Iran and the wider region.

The IOC is responsible for overseeing the Olympic Games and promoting sports worldwide. Members play a key role in decision-making, policy formation, and the future direction of the Olympic movement.

Aghaei’s election has been welcomed as a proud moment for Iran and for women in sports leadership.
