Spain Declines to Join Trump’s Peace Initiative

Spain has decided not to take part in the “Board of Peace” initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump to address global conflicts. The Spanish government said its decision is based on its strong support for multilateral cooperation and the United Nations system.

Speaking to reporters late on Thursday, January 22, 2026, after an European Union summit in Brussels, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Spain appreciated the invitation but would not join the initiative. “We appreciate the invitation, but we decline,” he said.

Sánchez explained that Spain prefers to work through international organisations such as the United Nations and the European Union when dealing with global issues like wars and conflicts. He said Spain believes that collective decision-making and cooperation among many countries are more effective than actions led by a single nation.

The Board of Peace initiative was announced by President Trump as a new effort to resolve international disputes. However, some countries have raised questions about how it would work and whether it would fit within the existing global system.

Spain’s decision highlights its commitment to diplomacy through established international platforms rather than joining a new, separate initiative.
