Speaker Faces No-Confidence Threat from Opposition

According to Congress sources, several Opposition parties are discussing whether to bring a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. They are unhappy with the way the House has been functioning and feel the Speaker has not been fair to the Opposition.

At the same time, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are scheduled to begin discussions on the Union Budget for 2026–27 on Monday (February 9, 2026). The Budget was presented earlier by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.

Tensions between the government and the Opposition have increased in recent days. Last week, the Lok Sabha passed the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address by a voice vote. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not give his usual reply to the debate, which is normally a standard practice.

This happened amid loud protests from Opposition members. They raised objections over the Indo-U.S. trade deal and also accused the Speaker of not allowing Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi to speak in the House.

Opposition leaders said this showed that they were not being given a fair chance to express their views. They claimed that democratic procedures were not being properly followed.

On Thursday (February 5, 2026), Speaker Om Birla explained why the Prime Minister did not attend the House to reply. He said he had advised Mr. Modi not to come because he had “concrete information” that some Congress MPs might stage an unexpected protest near the Prime Minister’s seat.

The Speaker said the decision was taken to avoid any disruption or security issue. However, the Opposition strongly criticised this move, calling it undemocratic.

With Parliament now preparing to debate the Union Budget, political tensions are expected to continue, and the possibility of a no-confidence motion against the Speaker could further heat up the situation.
