Sri Lanka defeated England by 16 runs in a high-scoring second ODI at Leeds, thanks to a brilliant century from Kusal Mendis and a strong performance from their bowlers in the final stages.
The victory levelled the three-match ODI series 1-1, setting up an exciting decider between the two teams.
Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first. Their innings got off to a positive start as Pathum Nissanka and Kamindu Mendis helped provide a solid foundation. Kamindu scored 25 runs from 33 balls before Sri Lanka looked to their middle order to increase the scoring rate.
Kusal Mendis then took control of the innings. The Sri Lankan batter produced an outstanding unbeaten 121 runs, guiding his team through the middle and final overs. His innings helped Sri Lanka reach a strong total of 321/6 in 50 overs.
Pavan Rathnayake and Janith Liyanage also made useful contributions, allowing Sri Lanka to maintain a high scoring rate throughout the innings.
England began their chase strongly. Openers Tom Banton and Ben Duckett put together an impressive partnership worth 143 runs, giving the hosts a strong platform and putting pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers.
However, England struggled after the opening partnership was broken. Jos Buttler and Will Jacks tried to keep the chase alive, but regular wickets prevented England from maintaining the required scoring rate.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers produced an excellent performance during the crucial final overs. Dilshan Madushanka and Eshan Malinga played important roles in keeping England’s lower order under pressure.
Dunith Wellalage was particularly effective with the ball, taking three wickets as Sri Lanka continued to find breakthroughs when England needed them most.
England eventually finished on 305/9, falling 16 runs short of Sri Lanka’s target.
The victory was an important response from Sri Lanka after England’s performance in the opening match. Kusal Mendis’ unbeaten century provided the foundation, while the bowlers ensured that England could not complete its chase.
With the series now level at 1-1, the final ODI will decide the winner of the three-match contest.
