Sri Lanka Begins Celebrations for Thai Pongal Festival

Colombo: Communities across Sri Lanka have begun celebrating Thai Pongal, the traditional harvest festival, as the main day of the festival will be observed tomorrow. Pongal marks the start of the sun’s northward journey, which also signals the end of the winter solstice.

Pongal is a four-day festival, and each day has its own special meaning and customs. The celebrations begin with Bhogi Pongal, which is observed today. On this day, people clean their homes, throw away old and unwanted items, and light bonfires as a symbol of renewal and a fresh beginning.

The main day, Thai Pongal, is celebrated tomorrow. On this day, families prepare pongal, a special dish made from newly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery, cooked in clay pots in the open. When the milk boils over, people happily shout “Pongalo Pongal!”, which represents abundance, happiness, and prosperity.

The festival brings families and communities together and highlights gratitude to nature, the sun, and farmers for a successful harvest. Colorful decorations, traditional prayers, and festive meals are an important part of the celebrations across the island.
