Sri Lanka Honors 2019 Easter Victims with Nationwide Observances

On April 21, Sri Lanka is holding nationwide religious events to remember the victims of the 2019 Easter attacks. These ceremonies mark seven years since the tragic bombings that occurred on Easter Sunday.

Rev. Father Jude Krishantha Fernando, a spokesperson for the Catholic Church, shared details about the plans. Churches across the country are hosting special services today. Activities include ringing bells, observing two minutes of silence, lighting candles or oil lamps, and holding prayer services to honor those who lost their lives.

A major event is taking place at St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo, led by Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith. Traffic restrictions have been put in place around the shrine from 7:00 a.m. until the service ends. Similar observances are happening at St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo.

Later today, a prayer walk is scheduled to start at Maris Stella College in Negombo and end at St. Sebastian’s Church. Priests and devoted followers are expected to participate in this spiritual procession.
