SRM Prime Hospital successfully treated a neovaginal fistula in a 22-year-old
patient who had recently undergone male-to-female gender-affirming surgery at
another hospital. A neovaginal fistula is an abnormal opening between the rectum
and the new vagina, which can cause gas and stool to pass through the vagina.
Doctors closed the opening using a patch made from cow tissue (bovine pericardial
patch). The procedure was done using a minimally invasive endoscopic method, so
the patient did not need major open-abdominal surgery and could go home the same
day.
