In Portugal, a series of strong storms has caused heavy damage and claimed the lives of at least 11 people since late January. The latest victim was a 64-year-old man who was swept away by floodwaters near the Amoreira Dam in the town of Pias.
According to the National Republican Guard, the man was driving through a flooded stretch of road when sudden flash floods dragged his vehicle away. Rescue teams later confirmed his death. Authorities have repeatedly warned people not to travel through flooded areas, as rising waters can quickly become dangerous.
Two major storms, named Kristin and Leonardo, have hit the country in recent weeks. These storms brought heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding to many regions. Homes, roads, and public infrastructure have been damaged, and several areas faced power cuts and transport disruptions. Officials said Storm Kristin caused the most destruction.
In response to the crisis, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced a relief package worth 2.98 billion dollars. The funds will be used to support affected families, repair damaged homes, and help businesses recover their losses.
The government has also extended the nationwide state of calamity until February 8. This allows authorities to take emergency measures and speed up rescue, repair, and relief operations.
Officials have urged residents to stay alert and follow safety instructions as bad weather may continue in some areas.
