Prices of several common food items have changed significantly across southern India over the past two years. While some products have become more expensive, the prices of others have fallen.
A study by South First compared retail prices recorded on August 18 in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The comparison covered Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Kerala was included only for the years and products where complete data was available.
Sunflower Oil and Coriander Become More Expensive
Among the products studied, sunflower oil and coriander recorded noticeable increases in price.
Higher prices can affect household budgets because cooking oil and spices are regularly used in most homes. Even a small increase in the price of everyday items can add to monthly food expenses.
The rise in prices can be influenced by several factors, including supply, production costs, transportation expenses and changes in demand.
Prices of Some Pulses and Spices Fall
While some items became more expensive, the prices of tur dal, red chilli and turmeric declined during the period covered by the study.
Tur dal is an important source of protein for many households and is widely used in South Indian cooking. A fall in its price could provide some relief to consumers.
Lower prices for red chilli and turmeric could also reduce the cost of preparing everyday meals.
Sugar Prices Also Increased
Sugar was another product that saw an increase in price.
Sugar is commonly used in homes, restaurants and food businesses. A rise in its price can therefore affect both consumers and businesses.
The change in sugar prices shows that food prices do not always move in the same direction. While some agricultural products may become cheaper, others can become more expensive at the same time.
Comparison Across Southern States
The study looked at prices in four major southern states — Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
Food prices can vary between states because of differences in local production, transportation costs, supply levels and demand. Prices can also change depending on the availability of a particular product in local markets.
Kerala was included where the required data was available, but the study did not have complete information for every year and every item.
Why Food Prices Matter
Changes in the prices of basic food items have a direct impact on families. Households often have to adjust their monthly budgets when the prices of cooking oil, pulses, spices and sugar change.
For consumers, falling prices can provide some relief, while rising prices can increase household expenses.
The three-year comparison also shows that food inflation is not the same for every product. Some items can become cheaper while others rise sharply during the same period.
A Mixed Picture for Consumers
Overall, the data presents a mixed picture of food prices in southern India.
The rise in sunflower oil, coriander and sugar prices may increase household expenses. At the same time, lower prices for tur dal, red chilli and turmeric could offer some relief.
The comparison of prices from 2024 to 2026 provides a useful picture of how the cost of common kitchen items has changed across southern India and shows the different trends affecting consumers in the region.
