Sunrisers Hyderabad Sign Coetzee

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has announced the signing of South Africa pacer Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for David Payne, who is unable to play due to an ankle injury. Coetzee will join SRH for ₹2 crore.

Payne played two matches for SRH in IPL 2026, taking two wickets at an economy rate of 14. Coetzee has previously played for Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, collecting 15 wickets in 14 matches. His best season was with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, where he took 13 wickets in 10 matches at an economy rate of 10.18.

Coetzee has also represented South Africa internationally, playing four Tests, 14 ODIs, and 18 T20Is, with 67 wickets across formats.

SRH has faced several injuries this season. Payne was already a replacement for Jack Edwards, who was ruled out due to a foot injury. Earlier in the week, England’s Brydon Carse was replaced by Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka after sustaining a hand injury. Pat Cummins, SRH’s star player, has missed most matches since July 2025 due to a back injury but is expected to return for the match against Rajasthan Royals on 25 April.

Ishan Kishan has been leading SRH in Cummins’ absence. Currently fifth with four points from five matches, SRH will next face Chennai Super Kings in Hyderabad on Saturday. The team recently defeated Rajasthan Royals and coach Daniel Vettori expressed confidence in their chances.
