Several districts in North and Delta Tamil Nadu are preparing for heavy to very
heavy rain as a new cyclonic storm may form over the Bay of Bengal by November
27. Once it develops, it will be named Cyclone Senyar, a name given by the UAE
which means “lion.”
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Tamil Nadu will
experience very rainy weather for the next 2–3 days. Rainfall of 12–20 cm is
expected in three Delta districts on November 28, in seven districts including
Chennai on November 29, and in Tiruvallur on November 30.
Because of the worsening weather, schools in Rameswaram will remain closed on
Wednesday.
IMD officials said two weather systems are influencing the rain:
Cyclone Senyar forming near the Strait of Malacca
A well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal
These systems will affect the intensity and movement of the rainfall in the
coming days.
