Tamil Nadu CM Pushes for Greater State Autonomy

On Wednesday, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin presented a report in the Tamil Nadu Assembly calling for more powers and financial independence for states. He also urged for amendments to the Constitution, saying that many states still face challenges in getting enough funds and authority under India’s federal system.

The report was prepared by a committee led by former Supreme Court judge Kurian Joseph and was submitted to the Chief Minister on February 16.

Stalin called the report “historic”, saying it is an effort to improve the relationship between the Centre and the states and to strengthen federalism in India.

The move is seen as part of Tamil Nadu’s push to ensure states have more control over their finances and governance, and it could influence discussions on Centre–state powers across the country.
