Tamil Nadu Electoral Roll Sees Major Revision

After nearly four months of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work across Tamil Nadu, the final electoral roll was officially released on February 23 by the Election Commission of India.

As per the updated list, Tamil Nadu now has 5,67,07,380 (over 5.67 crore) registered voters. During the revision process, around 74 lakh names were removed from the voter list. These removals happened after verification drives carried out across the State.

The Election Commission has described this exercise as a regular administrative process. The aim was to update the voter list by removing duplicate names, shifting voters, deceased persons, and other ineligible entries. Officials say such revisions help ensure fair and transparent elections.

However, the large number of deletions has raised questions in political circles. With the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election approaching, many are discussing how this change in voter numbers could affect the political situation.

The impact may differ from one constituency to another. In some Assembly seats, the number of deleted voters is being compared with the victory margin from the last election. If a seat was won by a small margin earlier, even a small change in voter numbers could influence future results. In constituencies where the victory margin was large, the impact may be less noticeable.

Political parties are closely studying the revised figures to understand how the updated roll may affect their support base. Leaders from both the ruling party and the opposition are likely to examine whether the deletions were evenly spread across regions or concentrated in specific areas.

As Tamil Nadu prepares for the 2026 Assembly election, the revised electoral roll has become an important topic of discussion. While the revision is officially meant to improve accuracy, its political effects will become clear only during the next election.
