Tamil Nadu Faces Hotter May Weather

Tamil Nadu is expected to experience higher-than-normal temperatures during May, according to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD said that both maximum (daytime) and minimum (nighttime) temperatures are likely to stay above average across most parts of the state this month. This means people may face hotter days as well as warmer nights.

However, the department has also predicted above-normal rainfall during May, which could provide some relief from the intense summer heat.

The weather department released this outlook on Friday, May 1, 2026, and also warned about the possible effects of rising temperatures, especially on agriculture. An agrometeorological advisory was issued to help farmers prepare for the changing weather conditions.

According to the forecast, coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, including the Cauvery delta districts, may experience three to five heatwave days during the month.

April was already extremely hot in Tamil Nadu, with many places recording above-normal daytime temperatures. The IMD expects similar weather patterns to continue in May.

Most districts are likely to remain hotter than usual, except for some areas in the Western Ghats, where temperatures may be relatively lower.

The increase in night temperatures may also cause discomfort, as warmer nights reduce cooling and can affect health, farming, and daily life.

The IMD’s forecast highlights the need for people, especially farmers and vulnerable communities, to stay prepared for both rising heat and changing rainfall patterns during the month.
