Tamil Nadu Fishermen Attacked at Sea, Suspected to Be Sri Lankan Pirates

Nine Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu, while fishing off the east coast of Kodaikkarai, became victims of a mid-sea attack on Tuesday night. This incident marks the sixth such attack on Tamil fishermen in the past two months. The fishermen, originally from Vanavanmahadevi near Vedaranyam, reported that the attackers believed to be from Sri Lanka, spoke in Tamil. N. Subramanian, A. Murugesan, A. Sundaramoorthy, C. Rajagopal, and S. Mahalingam were among those who ventured into the sea on Tuesday afternoon.

According to their account, four individuals, allegedly Sri Lankans, intercepted their boat while they were fishing in mid-sea off the Kodaikarai coast. Two assailants boarded their boat, assaulted the fishermen, and tied three of them to the vessel. They then commandeered two fishermen on their speedboat, making off with 600 kg of fishing net, GPS systems, and other equipment.

Subsequently, the pirates targeted another fishing boat, attacking N. Selvam, S. Muruganantham, M. Subramanian, and R. Shanmughavel, stealing various supplies and fishing equipment. The nine fishermen safely reached the shore the following morning and were admitted to the Government Medical College in Nagapattinam.
