Tamil Nadu Information Commission Investigates Misinformation by IPS Officers

The Tamil Nadu Information Commission has taken action against two IPS officers for allegedly providing incorrect information in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query. The case stems from a petition filed by L. Prem Anandan seeking details on abetment to suicide cases under Section 306 registered at the Adambakkam police station.

Dissatisfied with the responses from the Public Information Officer and the First Appellate Authority, the petitioner approached the Commission. The officers, K. Prabhakar and A. Pradeep (now Deputy Commissioner of Police, Madurai), are accused of furnishing misinformation when asked about the legality of police seizing house keys in the abetment of suicide cases.

State Chief Information Commissioner Md. Shakeel Akhter has directed the officers to provide explanations as to why action should not be taken against them under relevant sections of the RTI Act for providing inaccurate information to the petitioner.
