Tamil Nadu Reports Record Low Malaria Cases

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Health Department has reported a major success in fighting malaria. Over the past three years, 33 out of 38 districts have recorded zero local malaria cases. This brings the state closer to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) goal of malaria elimination by 2030.

Dr. A. Somasundaram, Director of Public Health, said that while complete eradication of malaria—meaning zero cases everywhere—is still far off, Tamil Nadu is now in the elimination phase. This phase means that local transmission is almost stopped, and only a few imported or isolated cases might occur.

The health department said its efforts include regular mosquito control, awareness campaigns, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment of malaria cases. Officials also urged citizens to continue taking precautions like using mosquito nets, clearing stagnant water, and seeking medical help immediately if they have symptoms.

These efforts have helped significantly reduce malaria, making Tamil Nadu one of the leading states in India working toward malaria elimination.
