Tarique Rahman Elected BNP Leader, Set For Premiership

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has elected Tarique Rahman as its Parliamentary Leader, paving the way for him to become the Leader of the House and take the oath as Prime Minister later today.

Earlier in the day, all 208 BNP Members of Parliament (MPs) took their oaths at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Bangladesh’s national parliament. Following this, the BNP held its first meeting of the Parliamentary Party, chaired by Tarique Rahman. During the meeting, he was formally elected as the party leader and confirmed as the only candidate for the position of Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, the Chief Election Commissioner administered the oath to all newly elected MPs.

In the recently concluded parliamentary elections, the BNP secured 209 seats, giving it a clear majority in the parliament. The radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats.

With Tarique Rahman now elected as the Parliamentary Party Leader, the BNP is set to form the government, and he is expected to take the Prime Minister’s oath later today. The party has expressed confidence in leading the country and implementing its agenda.
