Tarique Rahman Wins Two Seats in 2026

Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has said that his party will not hold a victory rally even though he appears set for a major win in the 2026 election.

Mr. Rahman won from two constituencies — Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 — marking a significant moment in his political career. His victory is being described by supporters as historic, as it signals a strong comeback for him and his party.

His return to Bangladesh on December 25, 2025, drew wide attention. After landing at Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport in Dhaka, he stepped out of the VVIP lounge and walked barefoot on a small patch of grass near the car park. Many of his supporters saw this as a symbolic gesture showing his emotional reconnection with the country.

For Mr. Rahman, the past two months have brought major changes. Nearly two decades ago, in late 2006, political uncertainty in Bangladesh prevented him from contesting his first parliamentary election. Since then, he has remained a key figure in BNP politics, but largely away from direct electoral contests.

In his speech after returning from London, Mr. Rahman took an inclusive approach. He called for unity among different communities and ethnic groups in Bangladesh. He stressed the importance of peace, cooperation, and national harmony.

He also addressed several allegations made against the BNP by its political opponents, especially the Awami League. He attempted to counter criticism and defend his party’s record, saying that BNP stands for democracy and development.

Despite the expected victory, Mr. Rahman has said the party will not organise a large celebration rally. Party sources say this decision reflects a desire to maintain calm and focus on governance rather than political showmanship.

With the 2026 election shaping up as a turning point, Mr. Rahman’s rise marks a new chapter in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
