Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin recently called for all countries in the Indian subcontinent to adopt a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). She believes this is crucial to protect women from discrimination. Speaking in Kolkata, she emphasized that the UCC is essential for any civilized society. Nasrin has been advocating for the UCC for four decades, stating that women suffer under religious laws through discrimination and persecution.
She argued that India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan should have uniform laws for their citizens. Nasrin also criticized religious schools, or madrasas, saying some produce extremists. She claimed child abuse and rape occur in these institutions and called for secular schools to replace them.
Nasrin’s visit to Kolkata was significant as she had been forced to leave the city nearly 19 years earlier due to violent protests over her writings. Her return was welcomed by West Bengal’s BJP government, which is currently leading efforts to implement the UCC in the state.
During her speech, Nasrin also expressed frustration over an incident where a poet linked to Trinamool Congress was prevented from speaking at her event. She stressed the importance of allowing free expression for all.
Nasrin’s remarks come as West Bengal prepares to introduce its own version of the UCC through a committee led by a retired Supreme Court judge.
