A shop operating on the premises of the Annavaram temple has been fined Rs 7 lakh after allegedly charging a customer Rs 7 more than the permitted price for a water bottle. The case has drawn attention because the penalty was significantly higher than the extra amount collected from the customer.
The complaint was filed by D Venkateswara Rao against Satya Deva Fancy Coconuts and Cool Drinks, a licensed shop operating within the premises of Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy Vari Devasthanam at Annavaram.
According to the complaint, the customer purchased a water bottle from the outlet and was charged Rs 7 above the prescribed price. The issue was subsequently taken up through the appropriate consumer complaint process.
The shop was operating legally on the temple premises, but being a licensed outlet does not allow it to charge customers more than the permitted price of packaged drinking water. Shops are expected to follow pricing rules and clearly display or charge the applicable maximum retail price.
