‘This win will definitely be on top’ – Ashraful on Bangladesh’s Historic Win Against Australia

Bangladesh’s first Test victory over Australia on Australian soil is a historic milestone, according to former captain Mohammed Ashraful. After 23 years of not touring Australia, Bangladesh dominated the match in all areas, leading them to a 1-0 series lead.

Australia struggled against Hasan Mahmud’s six-wicket haul, being bowled out for just 198 in their first innings. In response, Bangladesh’s batting lineup, led by Tanzim Hasan Tamim (101), captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (84), and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (65), reached 426 in 138 overs.

Mahmud and Miraz then combined for eight wickets to dismiss Australia for 284, putting Bangladesh on the brink of victory. Mominul Haque sealed the win with the winning runs off Beau Webster, securing a nine-wicket victory with a day to spare.

Ashraful, who spoke exclusively to Livemint from Darwin, called it a huge achievement and noted that Bangladesh’s 2003 tour experience in Australia played a crucial role. He emphasized how the team’s preparation, including 12 days of practice before arrival, contributed to their success.

Bangladesh had already shown strong form since November 2025, winning Test series against Ireland and Pakistan at home. Despite losing to Zimbabwe, they bounced back with this historic win over Australia.

Ashraful believes this victory surpasses Bangladesh’s previous best, including a 2022 win against New Zealand when they were world champions. He highlighted the team’s ability to dominate every session and outplay Australia’s strong pace attack.

The win also impacted the World Test Championship standings, reducing Australia’s lead while improving Bangladesh’s position. With this being their third victory in the WTC cycle, Bangladesh aims to continue their momentum in the second Test starting August 22.
