What began as a simple experiment by a group of Zoology students at Vimala College in Thrissur has grown into an interesting journey into the traditional world of silk production. The students initially started caring for silkworms out of curiosity and began feeding them leaves collected from a mulberry tree on the college campus.
The small activity soon attracted more interest among the students. As they observed the silkworms closely, they became interested in understanding their life cycle, feeding habits and the process through which they produce silk. This encouraged the students to take their experiment a step further and learn more about sericulture, the practice of raising silkworms for silk production.
Today, the students are involved in growing mulberry plants and raising silkworms. Mulberry leaves are an important food source for silkworms, making the cultivation of mulberry trees an essential part of their work. The students carefully look after both the plants and the silkworms as they move through different stages of their life cycle.
One of the most interesting stages for the students is the formation of the silk cocoon. When the silkworm reaches the appropriate stage, it produces a cocoon by creating fine silk fibres around itself. These cocoons are an important part of the silk-making process and give the students an opportunity to understand how a natural product is produced from a living organism.
For the Zoology students, the project is more than just a classroom activity. It allows them to apply what they learn in their studies to a practical environment. By observing the silkworms directly, they can better understand biological processes and the relationship between agriculture, insects and human livelihoods.
The initiative also gives the students a connection to Kerala’s traditional knowledge and heritage. Silk production has a long history in India, and learning about sericulture allows the students to explore how natural resources and traditional skills can support livelihoods and small-scale industries.
