The State Highways Department has built a 10.1 km flyover on the
Coimbatore-Avinashi road, from Uppilipalayam to Chinniyampalayam, at a cost
of Rs. 1,621 crore. Chief Minister Stalin inaugurated the flyover, which is
named G.D. Naidu Flyover.
The Airports Authority has now given permission to extend the flyover by 5 km,
from Goldwins to Neelampur, on the same road.
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu’s second largest city, has grown rapidly over the last
30 years, attracting people from nearby districts. As a major commercial hub and
gateway to Kerala, the city is also seeing growth in the IT sector.
With the population of the city and its suburbs now over 30 lakh, traffic has
increased sharply, especially during peak hours. Avinashi Road has been
particularly congested, and it often took more than an hour to travel from
Ukkadam to Karumathapatti due to the large number of traffic signals.
