U.S. President Donald Trump praised New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a meeting in New York, despite their past political conflicts. The two discussed immigration enforcement and a large housing project.
Trump, a Republican, had previously criticized Mamdani before he became mayor, calling him names like “my little communist” and “a total nut job.” However, the two have developed a surprisingly friendly relationship since then.
At a news conference, Trump told Mamdani, “Hopefully, you’re going to be a great mayor. You’re off to a good start.”
The private meeting in Manhattan was their third public encounter since Mamdani won the mayoral election last year. Trump, who was visiting New York for the United Nations General Assembly, praised Mamdani’s commitment to the city.
Mamdani expressed strong views on immigration policies during their discussion, including Trump’s plans to deport immigrants without Temporary Protected Status. The two also talked about a $21 billion housing project proposed earlier this year.
Despite their many disagreements, Mamdani said he would continue working with Trump because they both want to help New Yorkers.
Meanwhile, Trump’s visit came as major U.S. news networks were boycotting his press events in protest of his decision to ban several media outlets from the White House. Mamdani assured Trump that all members of the press were welcome at their joint conference.
Trump dismissed claims that he banned the media to distract from criticism over the war in Iran, saying he wasn’t worried about the media’s reported boycott.
