In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Vijay, created a major political surprise by winning the election in its first attempt.
TVK won 108 seats, becoming the single largest party in the state. This result surprised many political analysts, as several opinion polls had predicted a different outcome.
The ruling alliance led by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) came second with 73 seats, while All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) was pushed to third place with 53 seats.
This result marked a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics. For decades, the state was mainly governed alternately by DMK and AIADMK. TVK’s rise is now seen as breaking that long-standing pattern.
Even though TVK emerged as the largest party, it did not reach the 118 seats required for a clear majority in the 234-member Assembly.
Because of this, the party now needs support from other political groups to form the government.
Following the results, TVK reached out for support from several parties, including Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
However, TVK stated that it has not approached any National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parties for support, saying that its discussions are based on ideological alignment.
With coalition talks continuing, the political future of Tamil Nadu remains uncertain. All attention is now on whether TVK can secure the remaining support needed to cross the majority mark and form the next government.
