A disturbing incident involving two Class 10 students in Bihar’s Jamui district has triggered widespread concern after videos showing the teenagers being allegedly harassed and assaulted surfaced on social media. The incident reportedly took place on September 19, when the minor boy and girl were returning after attending coaching classes.
According to police, the two students were stopped by a group of people and allegedly surrounded and harassed. The incident was recorded on video, and clips later circulated widely on social media, leading to public outrage and demands for immediate action against those responsible.
Jamui police took suo motu cognisance of the videos and registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police identified several people allegedly involved in the incident, and three suspects have been arrested so far. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to investigate the case and trace the remaining suspects.
Jamui Superintendent of Police Bishwajeet Dayal said the police acted after becoming aware of the videos. Authorities are working to identify everyone involved and are examining the footage and other evidence as part of the investigation.
The circulation of the videos has created an additional concern because they reportedly reveal the identity of a minor victim. Bihar Police have initiated action against social media accounts accused of sharing the material. Reports on September 22 said an FIR had been registered against around 120 social media profile holders for circulating the video.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the case. The commission directed the Bihar Director General of Police to identify and arrest those responsible, ensure the safety and dignity of the victims and submit an action-taken report within seven days.
The Bihar State Commission for Women has also sought information about the incident and the action taken by the authorities. The case has therefore drawn attention from both law-enforcement agencies and women’s rights bodies.
The incident has also led to a political dispute. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident and called for strict action under the POCSO Act. Opposition leaders, including RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, have questioned the state government’s handling of women’s safety and law and order. These are political criticisms of the Bihar government rather than established findings about its performance.
The ruling alliance has pointed to the arrests and ongoing police investigation, while opposition parties have continued to raise questions about public safety. The political debate is continuing alongside the criminal investigation.
The case has also highlighted the risks of sharing videos involving minors. Authorities are urging people not to circulate such material, particularly when it can identify victims of sexual offences. The investigation is continuing as police search for the remaining suspects and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
