UNSC Delays Vote on Protecting Shipping in Strait of Hormuz

None

The United Nations Security Council has postponed a planned vote on a proposal related to the protection of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal aimed to allow defensive action to safeguard commercial vessels from possible attacks linked to Iran.

The council, which has 15 members, was expected to vote on the draft resolution last night. The proposal was put forward by Bahrain, which is currently holding the monthly presidency of the Security Council.

However, the vote was delayed. Officials said the main reason for the postponement was the Good Friday public holiday observed at the United Nations, which affected scheduling.

No new date has been announced yet for when the vote will take place. Discussions are expected to continue among member countries before a final decision is made.

The proposed measure is aimed at improving security for ships traveling through one of the world’s most important oil and trade routes. The Strait of Hormuz is a key passage for global energy transport, making any security decision there highly significant.

Diplomats say the delay does not mean the proposal has been dropped, but more time is needed for consultations. The situation is still being closely monitored by member states.
