US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that recent peace talks with Ukraine were
helpful, but more work is needed to reach an agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
US and Ukrainian officials talked for about four hours yesterday to discuss possible
ways to end the conflict. This meeting took place just a few days before a US envoy
is expected to visit Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The talks were held in Florida and were led by Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem
Umerov. Steve Witkoff, the US President Donald Trump’s envoy, and Trump’s
son-in-law Jared Kushner also attended the meeting.
These discussions happened after a leaked 28-point US peace plan surprised Ukraine
and European countries because it seemed to favour Russia.
Rubio said the aim is not only to stop the war but also to make sure Ukraine is
secure and able to grow in the future. Umerov said the US is listening and working
with Ukraine, but he did not share any details about what progress, if any, was made
in the talks.
