Venkatesh Withdraws From Controversial Foreign Tour

Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister K. Venkatesh has withdrawn from a proposed foreign tour of MLAs following a major controversy over the trip’s funding and purpose. The minister, who is considered a close aide of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, clarified that his department is not organising the visit and that he will not be leading it.

The clarification came a few days after reports said that more than a dozen MLAs, believed to be loyal to the Chief Minister, had sought approval for a “study tour” to Australia and New Zealand. The tour was reportedly planned to study best practices in animal husbandry and livestock management.

The proposed trip drew criticism from opposition parties and the public, with questions being raised about the timing, cost, and necessity of the visit. Critics asked whether such a tour was essential at a time when the state is facing financial pressures and other important issues. There were also concerns about how the trip would be funded and whether public money would be used.

In response to the controversy, Minister Venkatesh said that the Animal Husbandry Department had no role in planning the visit. He added that any decision regarding foreign tours must follow proper government procedures and approvals.

Sources said the government is now reviewing the proposal carefully. It is not yet clear whether the tour will go ahead or be cancelled.

The issue has sparked political debate in Karnataka, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling party of misusing power. Meanwhile, supporters of the government have argued that study tours can help lawmakers learn new ideas and improve policies in the state.

The controversy has once again brought attention to the use of public funds and the accountability of elected representatives.
