Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced on September 3, 2026, during a legislative session, the creation of two new police districts in Poonamallee and Kilambakkam to improve law enforcement in these rapidly expanding areas.
The Avadi Police District will be divided into the Poonamallee police district, while the Poonamallee sub-division will be split to form the Thirumazhisai sub-division. This restructuring is due to the growing urbanization and population in the region, which requires closer monitoring of public safety.
Similarly, the opening of the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus has led to rapid growth in that area, necessitating better law enforcement and traffic management. The Tambaram Police Commissionerate will reorganize its divisions to establish the Kilambakkam police district, with the Guduvanchery sub-division being divided into a new Kilambakkam sub-division.
Vijay also announced plans to outsource conservancy services for the Police Department at an annual cost of ₹60 crore. Additionally, he revealed that women will be recruited as firefighters to provide equal opportunities and improve specialized rescues involving women and children. The title “fireman” will be officially changed to “firefighter.”
New fire stations are planned in six locations: Porur, Sengipatti, Ayothiyapattinam, Ponerikarai, Thirupuvanam, and Vadamadurai, at a total cost of ₹16 crore. New buildings will also be constructed for 15 fire stations, including those in J.J. Nagar, Maduravoyal, and Koyambedu, currently operating on rented premises.
Uniform allowances for Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services personnel will now match those of Police Department staff, costing ₹3.77 crore annually. The number of Chief Minister’s Fire Service Medals awarded each year will increase from 120 to 240, with the cash stipend per recipient rising from ₹400 to ₹500.
