CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday ordered a major revamp and modernization of Amma Unavagams across the state, aiming to improve the quality, infrastructure, and efficiency of the popular low-cost food scheme.
Amma Unavagams, which provide affordable meals to the public, are an important welfare initiative serving thousands of people every day, especially low-income families, workers, and the urban poor.
Currently, 383 Amma Unavagams are functioning under the Greater Chennai Corporation, while another 237 are operated by other corporations and municipalities across Tamil Nadu.
During a meeting with senior government officials, the Chief Minister reviewed the current condition of these canteens and directed authorities to immediately improve their infrastructure. This includes upgrading kitchen facilities, dining spaces, sanitation standards, and overall maintenance.
He also instructed officials to quickly procure modern cooking equipment and necessary resources to improve food preparation, service quality, and customer experience.
The move is expected to strengthen the welfare scheme by making the canteens cleaner, more efficient, and better equipped to serve the public.
Officials said the modernization plan aims not only to maintain affordable food access but also to ensure better hygiene and improved service standards for beneficiaries.
The Chief Minister’s decision reflects the government’s focus on enhancing public welfare services while preserving one of Tamil Nadu’s most recognized social support programs.
